STANDARD MATTRESS SIZES
Here is a list of standard mattress sizes for your convenience. Use
them when an approximate measurement will suffice, as not all mattresses
are standard-sized.
Decide how far you'd like the quilt to hang down (this is called the " drop" )
and add that to the original measurement. For example: when measuring
for a quilt that will be used as a blanket, you could add a 12" drop
to the bottom and both sides. As illustrated below, adding a 12" drop
to a standard twin measurement would give a quilt measurement of 63" x
87" (or 39" + 12" + 12" wide by 75" + 12" long). When
measuring for a quilt to be used as a bedspread, you'd add 12" to
each side, 12" to the bottom, and 15" to the top to cover the
pillow.

A " lap" quilt can be any size you like, depending on its
preferred function and who it must cover. I like mine for napping,
and I want it to be long enough to ensure that my feet don't get cold,
so I'd make mine about 50" x 65" .
